  • Adam Nicholson crowned 2018 Michigan State Finn Champion.

Adam Nicholson representing the Royal Canadian Yacht Club wins the 2018 Michigan State Finn Championship.

The regatta was the first Finn event on Lake St. Claire in over 40 years which ran as part of the Bayview One Design hosted by famed Detroit Bayview Yacht Club.
Adam bested the fleet in a wide range of shifty conditions this weekend to take the championship home to Toronto as well as valuable points for the LATIS Great lakes Championship Series presented by Offshore Spars in partnership with Dockline and Eco Cart Safe. “This regatta surpassed my expectations of sailing in Detroit and is a must do for sailors looking to be challenged by good competition” says former Team Canada and world travled sailor Adam.

Last year’s champion representing the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane AUS John Woodruff was second after being forced to take a 4th on race 3 due to an unfavourable shift, was happy to see strong competition from the field. “This regatta was very good for the Finn class, it has put a lot of Detroit sailors in aww of what the Finn is capable of doing in a wide range of conditions.” Woody also ad’s “having our launch site at Crescent Sail Yacht Club has drawn a lot of interest from both Star and Lightning sailors to the Finn. We hope to capitalise on this by building a new fleet on Lake St. Claire and see more Finn activity in Detroit in the near future”

New boat owner Will Libcke representing Pontiac Yacht Club was third this year. Will chartered a class owned boat last season and got bit by the Finn bug pushing him to purchase a boat from Dinghy Racing USA’s Joe Chinburg. This was his second regatta with the new boat which he’s getting dialed in. “Its awesome to see the enthusiasm in the Finn especially from sailors in other fleets.” Will is going to oversee a Finn sailing evening this Wednesday night June, 6th at Crescent.

In forth was University of Toledo sailing team member and North Cape Yacht Club sailors Brian Pribe. This was the first time in a Finn for the 170 pound Rocket who used the class owned Devotie. “This was one of the best sailing experiences I’ve ever had. I learned so much and can’t wate to use what I’ve learned when coaching the juniors at Put-In-Bay this summer.” Brian plans on sailing the Finn a lot more and after graduating his first purchase will be a Finn.

Class Secretary and North Cape Yacht Club member Peter Frissell rounds out the top 5 in this year’s MSC.

Thanks to all who were involved this past weekend and we look forward to next year’s regatta.

  • FINN Great Lakes Championship Series

    (From Woody)

    Hi all,
Just a reminder that pre regerstration for the BOD regatta ends on Monday May, 14
There will be a $50 late fee added on the 15th.

The BOD is the kick off for the 2018 Great Lakes Championship Series and will also be a points regatta for your ISAF World ranking.
If you don’t have an ISAF number you can sign up for one free of charge, https://members.sailing.org/profiles/profile.php?unique=1523898162.0704&nocache=1&view=default

The first event of the circuit this year will be at the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit. The Bayview One Design (BOD Regatta) will be held June 2nd and 3rd. The race course is on lake St. Claire right in front of the Crescent Sail Club, the best part is that the commute to the start line is less then 5 minutes, and we can expect to get 10 races. The site for registration is…
    https://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=4595

The second event is June 16th and 17th Cleveland Race Week at Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland Ohio. This will be the first time that the Finns will be sailing CRW. There is a lot of interest in the Finn in Ohio and the hope is that a good Finn showing this year will lead to some more guys in Ohio getting into the boat. Registration for CRW is open…

We are also planning on a coaching Regatta with Darrell Peck at North Cape Yacht Club sometime in July (details to come)

We do have a few loaner boats available for these events if you know someone who is interested in sailing who doesn’t have a boat we can get them in one.

    Old Business

Insurance for the US Finn Class – should the Class purchase Liability Insurance to cover the
Class, Class officers, and members representing the Finn Class? Last year Terry Greenfield
sourced it at $1,300 for the meeting proposal. The cost has probably gone up and the class
should consider funding the annual cost of Liability Insurance at $1,500.
How does the Class-owned boat factor in?
Rob Coutts moves that the US Finn Class get Insurance in the $1,500 range for the US Finn Class
    Second Peter Frissell
    In Favor – 21
    Opposed – 0
    Passed

Growing the Finn Class – Do we want to look for Finn Coaches?
Henry Sprague suggested seeding money to new Finn sailors. Darryl Peck – we can look
for Under 23year olds to steer towards the Finn by paying Regatta entry fees, putting
    together travel grants, etc.
Management of class owned loaner boat(s) – The boats are the class property and should be
managed by the Area VP but decisions regarding selling, buying parts, changing the loan
situation should be made by a minimum of THREE Class officers. John Dane Suggested to have a
checklist for the class-owned boat turnover/receipt.
Henry Sprague moves to have 3 EBoard Officers sign off on the sale of Class-Owned Boats
    Second John Dane
    In favor – 21
    Opposed – 0
    Passed

    New Business

John Woodruff proposes to have more media and publicity during the regattas to help attract
sponsorship. Possibly hiring a publicist and encouraging sponsor support. He would like to allow
Alan Block to use his boat at a regatta and then wright an article about his experience.
Peter McGriff suggested getting more pictures, videos, blogs etc on the more popular younger
generation social media like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and better direction to the Finn
    YouTube site.
Gordon Lamphere and Rodion Mazin said they would take charge of the social media program.

How do we increase sponsorship for the regattas? Participating members should start thinking
about businesses that would benefit from exposure at these events and then approach them
about sponsoring. Looking for and approaching possible regatta sponsors is something all the
class members can contribute to – and not just the Club hosting the regatta. Still looking for
    good suggestions.

Luke Muller proposed having the US Finn Assn follow the International Finn class stance on
doing away with all one-use bottles. Several members agree with this practice and will strive
toward having water and Gatorade fill stations available at regattas and at their home clubs.
There may be a sponsorship opportunity for a company providing/selling bottles and/or setting
    up refill stations.

How do we set up a National Ranking System? Darrel Peck said that he knows of an established
system and will investigate setting it up. Several members offered to help input data once it is
    reestablished.

Does the US Finn Class want Regional Area Measurers? Members agree that having
Measurement coverage across the country would help the class.
Does the US Finn Class want unlimited pumping in all conditions or 8knotts and above? NO! All
agreed to keep it at 10 and above.

    Bids for 2019 Regattas
