The 2024 Finn Pacific Coast Championship, held at San Diego Yacht Club from September 21-22, delivered an exciting weekend of racing. Under relatively mild and sunny weather, with temperatures hovering around 75°F and winds around 8-10 mph, the Point Loma conditions provided the perfect backdrop for competitive sailing.
The top three finalists delivered standout performances, each showing consistency and skill across the seven races.
R. Phillip Ramming (Slow Rodeo) claimed first place with a series of top finishes. He secured three first-place finishes in races 1, 3, and 5 and never finished lower than third, allowing him to discard his third-place finish in race 6 for a total of 10 points. His steady performance made him the clear champion.
Nikita Mazin (Cuckoo Bus) finished second with 18 points. He had an impressive comeback, winning races 2, 5, and 7. Despite a ninth-place finish in race 3, which he discarded, Mazin’s first-place finishes kept him competitive throughout.
Andrew Kern (Quick) took third place with a total of 19 points. His consistent top-five finishes, including a win in race 6, secured his podium position. Despite a sixth-place discard in the final race, Kern’s early consistency helped him finish in the top three.
These sailors demonstrated impressive tactical skills, adapting well to the varying conditions across the seven races.
Looking ahead, San Diego Yacht Club will host the Finn Masters North American Championship from October 18-20, 2024. This upcoming event promises to attract top-level veteran Finn sailors from across North America, offering a thrilling conclusion to the fall Finn racing. The Masters Championship will be another memorable chapter in the rich history of Finn racing at SDYC and USA Finn Association.
