Nine Finns came to Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s (NHYC) Opening Day Race. It’s been several years since NHYC hosted the 2007 Olympic Trials and the Finns ruled the boatyard. Today’s racing was inside the bay in a nice little 10 knot southerly breeze. Sailing in the bay is always tricky as the breeze was on and off and quite shifty. The sailing area has lots of stuff going on so dodging random Duffys and making sure not to get tangled up with the 3 Harbor 20 fleets is always something to be aware of.
We would like to thank the guys who came down from the Alamitos Bay fleet, Peter Sangmiester, Glenn Selvin, and Rolland Fournier. We have 3 new boat owners here in Newport and I’d like to welcome Mike Downing, David Wood, and Brad Dwan to the Finn Brotherhood. This brings the total to 7 boats in the boatyard. We have a couple more guys sniffing around for Finns so if anyone knows of a Finn that needs a home, please let us know. Robert Kinney is leading the charge to get the Finn Fleet going in Newport. Robert can be contacted at robert@alcommarine.com . We are planning on sailing on Thursday evenings in the NHYC twilight series and looking for more local regatta opportunities.
The goal is to host a major Finn Regatta in 2024 or 2025.
